Heggies Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling 2005

Good rains for the beginning of the 2004/2005 growing season signalled a good vintage lay ahead. By mid January the skies had cleared and no subsequent rain, combined with balmy temperatures for the remainder of the season, meant that flavours ripened over an even and long period. The result is white wines from Eden Valley with excellent intensity of flavour and structure. The Heggies Vineyard is picked in the cool of the night and swiftly transported to our winery. The grapes are given minimal handling and only free run juice is used in the making of Heggies Riesling. The juice is fermented at a cool temperature using aromatic yeasts and blended early at the completion of vintage. As with the previous two vintages, the grapes had such perfect fruit/acid balance that the wine was able to be made without any extra acid additions. This is the hallmark of a great Heggies Vineyard Riesling vintage. The 2005 vintage Heggies Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling has a pale straw colour with a delicate green tint. The nose is intense, showing citrus blossom and white flowers tempered with a wisp of musk. The palate is fine, crisp and delicious with powerful flavours of lemon juice and fruit zest. The early fruit flavours build to a lingering fresh, fine finish showing the presence of the wine long after tasting. Heggies Riesling always shows a wonderful minerality, as though you are tasting the crushed quartz which is the underbed of much of the vineyard. The tight structure and natural acidity of this wine will see it age gracefully into the next decade.
